Timepieces are the most fascinating tools ever conceived by mankind, in my opinion. Ancient rocks carefully aligned to match the sunrise spots during the equinoxes and solstices. Apertures in buildings to keep track of sun rays throughout the year. Sundials placed on façades or plinths. Hourglasses, water clocks, clock towers and pendulum clocks. Pocket watches, wrist watches and atomic watches.

The above mentioned tools have a common denominator: keeping track of time – the continued sequence of events that occurs in our lives. Our species consciously acknowledged that there’s something defined as time. This opened a whole new plethora of concepts, thoughts, observations and ideas that deeply transformed us.

Can you imagine any kind of transportation, machinery, computing, music, astronomy, medicine and engineering without taking into account the time variable?

Harvesting, rituals, anniversaries and customs all around the world are tightly connected to calendars – an important medium/long term method of keeping track of time.

Measuring the passing of time is a paradigm that led us to better understand the universe that surrounds us, its natural laws, who we are and where we’re going. Explorations, science, arts and technological innovations that the humans achieved would be impossible without being aware of time.

Can you imagine any kind of transportation, machinery, computing, music, astronomy, medicine and engineering without taking into account the time variable?

The whole existence of every human being is eventually synthesized in our memories as a sequence of events happened in the spacetime dimension.

The pace of time is therefore a captivating phenomenon and the timepieces are enchanting tools that often carry emotions and memories. A watch is one of the best personal object to inherit because:

  • It’s usually small and practical to store
  • It was physically worn by its owner likely witnessing many important life moments
  • It can be inherited for generations over and over again with little maintenance
  • It’s a touching reminder of its owner
  • It can be customized if needed in order to better fit the heir

Furthermore, they are often technological and design marvels worth to be studied and, in case, collected. Clocks and watches are appealing. Timelessly – No pun intended.

Kron is a section of my website dedicated to watches, clocks and anything time related. Posts that belong to this topic are marked by the Kron logo I created and tagged as Kron. All the Kron tagged contents are listed here:
